Guide to Module 2: PharmacoEconomics

Module aim:

  • Introduce the principles of economic assessment
  • Define the different types of pharmaco-economic analyses
  • Teach critical appraisal of pharmaco-economic studies

Learning objectives:

  • Be aware of and able to identify the different methods used in
    pharmacoeconomic assessments
  • Understand the subjectivity of some of the parameter estimates used in
    pharmacoeconomic asessments
  • Be able to critically assess pharmacoeconomic studies
  • Ability to critically assess the quality of published pharmacoeconomic
    analyses
  • Ability to critically comment on the appropriateness of commodification of
    health care

Module content

2.  A Tutor-marked Assignment
3.  A set of reprints as directed readings.  The reprints fall into three groups
         a.        A set of papers on the economic assessments of various
interventions for eradication of H. pylori [List A] One of these form the basis of
the Tutor marked Assignment.
         b.        A set of consensus statements and guidelines on the conduct and
reporting of cost-effectiveness analyses [List B]
         c.        A paper on how to handle uncertainty in economic evaluations. This
is optional reading and for reference.
